permanent notam advises that 100ll avgas not available at yzf airport

By NOTAM issued on January 16, 2025 with permanent effect, the aviation community has been advised that 100LL avgas is not available in Yellowknife.  This statement is misleading as fuel can be obtained by prior arrangement with local suppliers other than the FBO.  NWTFA continues to lobby for the resumption of fuel services for general aviation aircraft and to seek funding for the acquisition of a fuel truck to facilitate such resumption.  For more information and updates, visit our advocacy page respecting the availability of avgas at YZF.

NWTFA hosted  work parties at Thistlethwaite Lake on September 11 and September 19, 2024 to conduct a remote site clean-up.  On the first day, 5 volunteers visited the site by floatplane and boat to gather debris for removal.  We spent 4 hours collecting approximately 275 kg of junk and debris and positioning it for subsequent removal by floatplane to Yellowknife for disposal.  Garbage collected included scrap metal, discarded building materials, empty fuel barrels, styrofoam, and general litter.  On the second day, 4 volunteers returned to the site to retrieve the garbage and deliver it to the solid waste facility.

NWTFA thanks Unsmoke Canada and The Great Outdoors Fund, for their support of this project.  As a result of their assistance and the enthusiastic labour of volunteers from both NWTFA and CASARA, this site is once again an attractive spot to be enjoyed by kayakers and other outdoor enthusiasts.  View our photo gallery for more before, during and after pictures!

NWTFA hosted a work party at the North Arm trailhead near Boundary Creek on Saturday, October 21, 2023 to conduct an extensive site clean-up.  Eleven volunteers, most of whom are members of NWFTA and/or CASARA, participated in the clean-up.  We spent approximately 7 hours collecting a total of 1200 kg of junk and debris, sorting and loading it into trailers and dump trucks for removal, and transporting it all to Yellowknife for disposal.  Garbage collected filled 3 trailers and 2 large dump trucks and included scrap metal, discarded building materials, broken-down snowmobiles, empty fuel barrels, 50 tires, old household appliances, and general litter.  All metal refuse was delivered to the metal recycling depot and the remainder of the garbage was taken to the solid waste facility.

NWTFA extends its thanks to Unsmoke Canada, The Great Outdoors Fund, the Department of Infrastructure of the Government of the Northwest Territories, the City of Yellowknife, and Precision North Recycling for their support of this project.  As a result of their assistance and the collective effort of our volunteers, this site is once again a suitable and safe trailhead providing access to wilderness recreation in the North Arm area.  View our photo gallery for more before, after and during pictures!  Check out Cabin Radio's story "Aviators and volunteers remove tons of waste from North Arm trailhead" for more information about this project.

KNOW YOUR ELT before going through security screening...

4/4/2023

During a recent trip south, we took our 406 ACK Emergency Locator Transmitter for recertification and installation of a new battery.  To our surprise, on the return trip, a diligent security official decided to verify that the unit didn’t exceed the maximum allowable watt-hour (Wh) rating for a battery in carry-on baggage.

According to CATSA guidelines for transport of lithium batteries, any lithium battery over 160 Wh cannot be carried on board an aircraft.  The Wh rating of a battery is calculated as its voltage multiplied by its amp-hour (Ah) rating.  Since neither rating was specified on our unit, the security official had to "perform a calculation".  After examining the label on our unit and doing some math on scrap paper, he determined its Wh rating to be 170 Wh, and announced that we must leave security and somehow place the ELT in our checked baggage.

Motivated by extreme reluctance to be separated from our ELT and its expensive new battery, we questioned the "calculation".  It turned out that the security official had scanned the label for any number that might relate to amperage, finding only TSO C-142a, which he then creatively multiplied by the voltage of the unit.  After explaining that a TSO number is not an electrical rating, we were able to quickly Google the installation/operating manual for our ELT and convince the official that its Ah rating was only 7.75 Ah.  The correct Wh calculation therefore yielded 93 Wh, so the official graciously apologized for the confusion and allowed us to carry the ELT on board.

The moral of this story is to know your ELT.  Better yet, travel armed with its specification sheet which clearly indicates the size of its battery.
