aviation history in the Northwest TErritories

The Northwest Territories has been synonymous with aviation dating back to the first use of aircraft in 1921 in the search for oil.  Since then, aviation has permeated throughout every aspect of northern living.  Aviation opened the north, making travel and transportation easier, faster and safer, just as it does today.  The Northwest Territories Flying Association (NWTFA) is committed to preserving and promoting the rich aviation history of the Northwest Territories.

Our e-library is dedicated to the aviation pioneers who helped make the Canadian north strong and free.  This material has been collected from open sources.  Please bring any errors or omissions to our attention so that we may ensure accuracy.  Anyone wishing to contribute to this collection is invited to contact us.

Pilot's Monument
Perched on top of "The Rock" in Yellowknife's Old Town, Pilot's Monument pays tribute to the bush pilots who flew under often extreme conditions to open Canada's North.  It's also the site of a rotating beacon used to alert boaters to floatplane traffic arriving and departing Back Bay and Yellowknife Bay.

Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre
The Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre is the territorial museum of the Northwest Territories.  Its exhibits introduce visitors to the unique  culture and history of the Northwest Territories.  They include a De Havilland Fox Moth aircraft restored from parts retrieved from three aircraft that crashed in the Northwest Territories wilderness.

Yellowknife Historical Museum
The Yellowknife Historical Museum celebrates the rich history of Yellowknife through both an indoor gallery and outdoor exhibits.  Since aviation has always played an integral role in life and industry in Yellowknife, plans are underway to grow its aviation collection.
