Fat Lake is situate approximately 93 nautical miles northeast of Yellowknife in close proximity to the treeline. The lake is large but relatively shallow with visible reefs and underwater shoals even far from shore. Caution should be exercised in landing and takeoff and when taxiing. Water depth barely adequate for floats has been encountered a considerable distance from shore.
Terrain consists of subarctic tundra, sandy eskers, and gravel beaches. Vegetation includes small evergreens and ground cover. Fishing opportunities are likely limited due to the lack of water depth. Fat Lake provides a nice location for a day trip to the subarctic tundra. Its beaches are suitable for picnics or cookouts and the eskers provide easy hiking with expansive views of the lake and surrounding terrain.
