PLACES TO FLY: FISHING LAKE
Fishing Lake is located on the Yellowknife River system approximately 53 nautical miles north of Yellowknife. This large lake features beautiful sandy beaches on both the north and west shores. A sandy esker running above and parallel to the Yellowknife river provides easy hiking and access to fishing in the many pools and rapids along the river. Hiking access along the river itself is dependent on water levels since much of the riverbed consists of large boulders and vegetation grows close to the banks.
Due to its proximity to Yellowknife and its location on the Yellowknife River system, Fishing Lake is a popular fly-in camping destination. Fishing opportunities include lake trout and arctic grayling. Black bears and wolves are known to frequent the area. A metal boat and old hunting shack can be found on the north beach.
Fishing Lake has been the site of several fly-in picnics hosted by the Northwest Territories Flying Association. Both beaches provide ample space for parking of multiple floatplanes.
