Places to fly: greenstockings lake
Greenstockings Lake forms the headwaters of the Yellowknife River and is located just south of the tree line and barrenlands. The western shore features a long sandy beach providing ideal floatplane parking. A large area of low sub-arctic overgrowth, including blueberry bushes and bakeapples, can be found directly behind this beach. It can be easily traversed by foot to reach nearby sandy eskers providing incredible views of the area. Large glacial erratics deposited during the last ice age can be seen from the eskers and from the air.
The flight path from Yellowknife to Greenstockings Lake passes over the former Discovery gold mine and most of the lakes in the Yellowknife River system. A day trip to Greenstockings Lake can easily be combined with a visit to Winter Lake slightly further north. Other interesting spots nearby include Singing Lake and Grizzle Bear Lake.
