Places to fly:   Mcdonald lake

McDonald Lake is located 90 nautical miles from Yellowknife on the mainland south of the southern shore of the East Arm of Great Slave Lake. This large deep lake boasts crystal-clear turquoise-green water. A direct flight path from Yellowknife to McDonald Lake crosses over the entry to the East Arm at Hearne Channel and offers stunning views of Great Slave Lake, Blanchet Island and Ethen Island.

A beach at the western end of the lake provides easy parking for several floatplanes. An open sandy area behind the beach would be suitable for tent camping. This site appears to have seen past use as a forest fire fighting base so might not be available during periods of fire suppression.

McDonald Lake offers enjoyable sportfishing for lake trout. A short but somewhat challenging walk through the bush adjacent to the beach provides access to rocks from which to fish in reasonably deep water.
