summer water multi-use SIGNAGE
Lakes in the Yellowknife area offer many commercial and recreational opportunities for residents and visitors during open-water months. Water areas are shared by users of floatplanes, sailboats, power boats, personal watercraft, canoes, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and more. All users have a shared responsibility for the safety of themselves and others. Exercise caution and situational awareness at all times to avoid and manage potential conflict with other users.
For more information on water activities in areas where floatplanes operate, and the capabilities and limitations inherent in the varying uses, please refer to our Yellowknife Summer Water Multi-Use brochure. NWTFA approached the City of Yellowknife several years ago with a proposal to design and sponsor multi-use signage to be placed at popular water access locations to educate users on prevailing activities and the associated risks. Unfortunately, the City was engaged in developing its own "wayfinding" strategy with a focus on tourism and, despite our participation at its community consultation, failed to take advantage of this opportunity to support the safety of its residents and visitors. |
LACK OF INTEREST FROM CITY OF YELLOWKNIFE SCUTTLES SIGNAGE PROJECT
May 8, 2019
NWTFA participated in a recent public "wayfinding strategy" session conducted by the City of Yellowknife. As the consultant retained by the City was not aware of our proposal for multi-use signage, it appears that the proposal is mired in municipal bureaucracy with the City lacking the motivation to advance the project. Since the signs would need to be placed on City property, NWTFA is unable to proceed further with the signage project. NWTFA will supply other interested groups with a copy of our multi-use brochure for their use and advise of the lack of interest of the City in the signage initiative.

PUBLICATION OF BROCHURE ON SUMMER WATER MULTI-USE
April 17, 2019
The City of Yellowknife has expressed management support for multi-use signage but insists that any signage must be consistent with the language and layout parameters of its visual identity program. NWTFA will be invited to participate in an upcoming meeting respecting City signage.
NWTFA has published its brochure entitled "Yellowknife Summer Water Multi-Use" to educate users about the various uses made of Yellowknife Bay, Back Bay and local lakes during the open-water season. Copies will be provided to other user groups for distribution to their members and clientele. The brochure is also available for download and permission is granted for public distribution.

ENGAGEMENT WITH CITY OF YELLOWKNIFE ON SIGNAGE
March 6, 2019
NWTFA has provided the City of Yellowknife with a map showing proposed locations for multi-use signage. Staff expressed support for the signage concept but indicated that consultation with communications staff would be needed to ensure consistency with the City's design strategy. NWTFA is willing to sponsor the cost of simple signs, hopefully with the support of other recreational organizations, if the City would contribute sign posts and installation labour. A mock-up of a proposed sign was provided to City staff in December 2018.

PROGRESS ON SIGNAGE PROJECT
November 20, 2018
Draft multi-use signs and brochures prepared by NWTFA have been distributed to various stakeholder groups for review and comment. All feedback has been positive. Approval from the City of Yellowknife will be required prior to placement of signs as the target locations are on municipal property. NWTFA has obtained a quote for production of 8 signs and will request that the City fund installation costs.

PARTNER SUPPORT FOR SIGNAGE PROJECT
August 8, 2018
NWTFA has been in contact with most user groups identified as potential partners for the multi-use signage project. All groups support the concept and formatting of the draft signage and brochure. The sign would depict summer water uses and highlight important safety considerations while the brochure would contain more detailed information about each activity and its associated risks and limitations. Once a budget has been developed for production of signs, NWTFA will approach the City of Yellowknife for support.

SIGNAGE AND INFORMATIONAL BROCHURE UNDER DEVELOPMENT
April 8, 2018
NWTFA is exploring concepts for multi-use signage to educate users about the multiple activities common on water bodies around the Yellowknife area. The signage would focus on basic safety information amid competing uses of the water. The objective is to promote safety and situational awareness rather than to provide tourist information. NWTFA is also developing an informational brochure which various user groups could post on their websites and distribute to members and clientele.

MULTI-USE SIGNAGE PROPOSED
August 30, 2017
NWTFA has reached out to various stakeholders and user groups to assess interest in the creation of multi-use signage to educate the public about multiple uses of Back Bay and other water bodies within the City of Yellowknife. Everyone is enthusiastic and keen to be involved in the project. A preliminary concept will be developed before presenting a detailed proposal to the City. NAV Canada has requested that the signage include reference to restrictions on drone activity.
The idea for multi-use signage arose as a result of ongoing discussion among NWTFA and the sailing and power boating clubs concerning safety on Back Bay. Although Back Bay is a licensed water aerodrome, it is also heavily used by boaters, paddlers, standup paddleboarders and jetskiers. Many users are not aware of the visibility and mobility limitations of floatplanes and would benefit from education and increased situational awareness.
