thaidene nene national park reserve
Thaidene Nene National Park Reserve was established in 2019 to protect the East Arm region of Great Slave Lake and surrounding lands. The Northwest Territories Floatplane Association spent many years monitoring efforts by Parks Canada to establish this national park reserve. NWTFA members frequently visit spectacular sites located with the proposed park boundary and share an interest in preserving the ability to enter the area by private aircraft and engage in traditional land uses including fishing, berry picking and sightseeing.
NWTFA engaged in numerous consultation and focus group meetings with Parks Canada to bring forward issues relating to aviation activity in the proposed park reserve. NWTFA took the position that aircraft landings and take-offs in the park reserve should be unrestricted and that any permitting process should be flexible and inexpensive. NWTFA/COPA 108 supported the "Reliance Adjustment" proposed by the East Arm Property Owners Association to exclude the area around Reliance from the park boundaries so as to maintain its use as an important transportation and economic hub.
As a result of advocacy efforts by NWTFA and other stakeholders, the regulations adopted by Parks Canada to govern access to and activity in this park reserve differ significantly from those applicable in other national parks and reserves. In particular, aircraft access is allowed subject to a simple permit/registration process and firearms can be carried in the park reserve for protection against wildlife.
