places to fly: waldron river
The Waldron River flows into Great Slave Lake on the north shore of McLeod Bay several miles east of Thompson Landing. The north shore of McLeod Bay is included in the Thaidene Nene Territorial Protected Area abutting the recently established Thaidene Nene National Park Reserve.
A sandy beach near the mouth of the river provides suitable floatplane parking. Small lake trout can be caught off the rocks along the shoreline of the lake. A short walk upstream from the outflow of the river leads to numerous pools and small rapids. The riverbed is rocky and the water is fast-moving, so wading is not recommended. Arctic grayling can be caught in the river.
Vegetation in the area is typical of the boreal forest and includes spruce, birch, pine, tamarack. Blueberry bushes and fireweed grow near the shoreline. Mountain cranberries (lingonberries) can be found on the forest floor.
