places to fly: Winter lake
Winter Lake is located on the barrenlands slightly north of the tree line and the head-waters of the Yellowknife River. The south shore features a long sandy beach perfect for floatplane parking. The water drops off quite deeply from the beach and there are only a few rocks and no significant reefs offshore. The terrain consists of open sandy eskers with sparse overgrowth of subarctic vegetation. Caribou migrate through this area and hoofprints can be observed on the eskers.
The ruins of Fort Enterprise, where Sir John Franklin had a winter base in 1821, are situate on the northwest shore of Winter Lake near the outflow of the Snare River. Little remains of the fort itself but the outlines of foundations can still be seen.
The flight path from Yellowknife to Winter Lake passes over the former Discovery gold mine and most of the lakes in the Yellowknife River system. Other interesting destinations nearby include Greenstocking Lake, Singing Lake and Grizzle Bear Lake.
