yellowknife airport (CYZF)
The Yellowknife (CYZF) airport and its surrounding airport community offers a variety of aviation services for pilots, air passengers, charter services, and cargo. The CYZF airport serves as a hub for travel between all Northwest Territories communities and southern Canada. The CYZF airport has two asphalt runways: Runway 16/34 and Runway 10/28.
Air traffic control services are provided by NAV CANADA. During the hours of 0700 to 2200 daily, CYZF is subject to Class D airspace with a terminal control area of 5 nautical miles, a transition area of 15 nautical miles and a control area extension below 12,500' of 25 nautical miles. IFR aircraft require ATC clearance. VFR aircraft must establish radio contact with ATC. ATC makes sure IFR aircraft keep safe distance between each other while VFR pilots are responsible for keeping safe distance from other aircraft. During the hours of 2200 to 0700 daily, CYZF reverts to Class E airspace. IFR traffic requires ATC clearance but VFR traffic does not. VFR pilots can request advisory information from ATC. Weather observations are available 24 hours per day. Effective June 17, 2025 until November 30, 2025, airspace will be Class D from 8 am to 8 pm and Class E from 8 pm to 8 am. This change to the level of service provided by NAV CANADA is expected to be temporary and will be communicated by NOTAM. arrival at CYZFInbound aircraft should contact ATC on the tower frequency (118.5) at 15 nautical miles from the CYZF airport. Pilots should state their position, advise that they are inbound for landing at the airport, and wish to park on Apron IV (locally known as uncontrolled taxiway KILO).
general aviation parkingParking for general aviation aircraft is available in an area locally known as uncontrolled taxiway KILO. Air traffic control will provide progressive taxi instructions upon landing. Aircraft should be parked in designated parking stalls and pushed perpendicular to the edge of the apron. Pilots must provide their own tie-downs. Electrical service is not available.
The airside access gate near the general aviation parking is secured. Vehicles may not be left unattended in aircraft parking stalls. Vehicle parking and a pilot information booth is located adjacent to the gate. Courtesy vehicles are not available. Ground transportation can be obtained through local cab companies. fuel servicesAs advised by a NOTAM posted on January 16, 2025 with permanent effect, 100LL avgas is not available at the YZF airport. This NOTAM is filed by the FBO operator (Det'on Cho Logistics Shell) and results from its loss of a fuel truck in December 2023. Information on its website advertising 100LL avgas is out-of-date and inaccurate.
Notwithstanding the NOTAM, 100LL avgas remains available in Yellowknife through advance arrangement with a local supplier. Refer to our pilot information page concerning the availability of avgas for current information on sources of 100LL avgas in Yellowknife. Refer to our advocacy page respecting availability of avgas for more information on this challenging situation and our efforts to secure ongoing availability of 100LL avgas. |
