midnight sun fly in 2017

The biannual Midnight Sun Fly In will be held in Yellowknife, NT on July 6 - 9, 2017. Planning is underway already and volunteers are needed. All NWTFA members are encouraged to participate so that this event will successfully showcase our northern hospitality and wonderful float-flying opportunities.

The NWTFA will once again support the Fly In by sponsoring and hosting a fly-out picnic to a nearby lake. We'll be looking for a suitable location with a sandy beach and nice water depth to allow parking for lots of planes. All NWTFA members are invited to attend the picnic.

chili cook-off

The annual NWTFA Freeze-Up Party and Chili Cook-Off was held on November 5, 2016. Chili entries were contributed by five members and sampled by all present. Len Smith was once again the winner of the coveted chili cup. Thanks to Adlair Aviation for use of its pilot lounge for this event.

The annual Freeze-Up Party and Chili Cook-Off will be held on Saturday, November 5, 2016 commencing at 6:30 pm at the Adlair Pilot Lounge. All NWTFA/COPA108 members, families and friends are welcome.

Bring a potluck dish to share or cook up some chili to enter in our annual cook-off. Rumour has it that some members are already perfecting their secret recipes so competition is expected to be intense. NWTFA will provide cutlery, dinner rolls and non-alcoholic beverages.

COPA FOR KIDS - CANCELLATION

The 2016 COPA for Kids event has been cancelled due to unfavourable wind conditions. NWTFA/COPA Flight 108 looks forward to hosting this event again in 2017.

The NWT Floatplane Association/COPA Flight 108 will be hosting its annual COPA for Kids event on Saturday, July 16, 2016 at the Wardair Dock in Yellowknife. The mission of COPA For Kids is to provide a motivational aviation experience, focusing on a flight in an airplane, in an effort to interest and engage youth in general aviation. Youth between ages 8-17 are eligible for COPA for Kids flights.

Our COPA for Kids event is unique in that all flights are in floatplanes. Kids are initially introduced to the science and general mechanics of the plane by the pilot and are then treated to a flight in the co-pilot's seat. Although the flights are free, pre-registration is required. This event is made possible by the volunteer effort of our members as pilots, dock handlers and dispatchers.

Pilots interested in participating should contact Hal Logsdon. Pilots must be on floats, have an intercom and headphones for each passenger, and be current and have all required equipment on board. We will operate flights at 9 am, 10 am and 11 am. Pilots are required to do a brief preflight demonstration before each flight and take passengers for a short flight.

rust remover - 2016 agenda

The 2016 NWTFA Rust Remover will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2016 at the Baker Centre in Yellowknife. Registration commences at 12:15 pm and the recurrent training program will run from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. The line-up includes presentations from NavCanada and CASARA, AOPA safety videos, and a round table discussion on water safety. More details appear in the agenda.

The Rust Remover is free for members of NWTFA/COPA Flight 108. The fee for non-members is $35. Memberships can be paid at the door or in advance through the membership section of the website.

"Rust remover" recurrent pilot training

The annual "Rust Remover" hosted by the Northwest Territories Floatplane Association/COPA Flight 108 will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2016. Private pilots won’t want to miss this seminar since participation qualifies as the recurrent training requirement.

Program details are still being arranged. Final program details will be distributed in the near future. The seminar is free for NWTFA/COPA 108 members. The fee for non-members is $35. Annual general meeting and bbq/potluck

The 2016 Annual General Meeting of the Northwest Territories Floatplane Association will be held on Saturday, May 28, 2016. All members are urged to attend. The AGM is combined with a BBQ/Potluck as our social event for the opening of float season. We promise to keep business to a minimum. Bring your family and any prospective members and enjoy the evening with us.

Further details are in the AGM Notice. Members are asked to bring a salad, dessert or munchies to round out our potluck meal. NWTFA will supply burgers, smokies, hot dogs, soft drinks and juice. Please RSVP so that we can estimate how much food to order. The AGM will be conducted after the BBQ/potluck. The director positions of Secretary, Treasurer and Member-at-Large will be elected at the AGM this year.

Snow is melting and float season is approaching... so the Northwest Territories Floatplane Association has set dates for the annual Rust Remover and the AGM/BBQ. Our Rust Remover recurrent pilot training will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2016. The annual general meeting of the NWTFA and our spring breakup BBQ/potluck will be held on Saturday, May 28, 2016. Locations and times will be announced shortly.

We are starting to make plans for our annual Rust Remover in May. If you have any preferred topics, or suggestions for persons who might be good presenters, please contact Hal Logsdon. Some ideas that have been mentioned to date include communication phraseology, SAR and survival, and right of way rules.
