Several members of NWTFA undertook a day excursion to Fat Lake on a beautiful fall day in September 2017. Four planes and pilots plus six passengers made the trip and spent a pleasant afternoon roasting smokies, relaxing on the beach, picking cranberries, and hiking along the eskers. Despite one minor mechanical challenge outbound and floats rubbing bottom before reaching shore, everyone enjoyed a successful flight and day on the land. Fat Lake has now been added as one of the "Places to Fly" on our website. It's a lovely example of subarctic tunda and readily accessible by floatplane from Yellowknife. However, pilots should be forewarned that the lake is shallow, with rocks and shoals extending far from shore. |
