Greenstockings Lake has now been added to the profiles on the Places to Fly section of our website. Several members of NWTFA made a day trip to Winter Lake and Greenstockings Lake last summer. Greenstockings Lake is situate just south of the tree line and features sub-arctic vegetation, sandy eskers and glacial erratics. Winter Lake is slightly north of the tree line and features barrenland vegetation and open sandy eskers. Both sites have long sandy beaches providing ideal floatplane parking. |

Annual membership dues for NWTFA/COPA108 are $35 and cover membership for the calendar year. All memberships are individual and are now payable for the 2017 year. Membership dues help cover the cost of our annual Rust Remover, social programs, AGM and spring BBQ, and COPA for Kids. A strong membership is vital to maintain our voice with respect to general aviation issues in the Northwest Territories.
Whether you are a new member or are renewing your membership, please complete the Membership Application in full, to assist in keeping our mailing list and member directory accurate and up to date. The biannual Midnight Sun Fly In will be held in Yellowknife, NT on July 6 - 9, 2017. Planning is underway already and volunteers are needed. All NWTFA members are encouraged to participate so that this event will successfully showcase our northern hospitality and wonderful float-flying opportunities.
The NWTFA will once again support the Fly In by sponsoring and hosting a fly-out picnic to a nearby lake. We'll be looking for a suitable location with a sandy beach and nice water depth to allow parking for lots of planes. All NWTFA members are invited to attend the picnic.
NavCanada has provided a reminder of the closure of Arctic Radio (North Bay Flight Information Center) effective November 10, 2016. The Notice of Change is posted on the NavCanada website. NavCanada has also supplied maps that show the reassignment of FISE frequencies and Flight Information Regions. Click on the images below to view pdf versions of these maps.
There will be a special meeting of the Northwest Territories Floatplane Association on Wednesday, September 7, 2016 at 7:00 PM at the Northern Frontier Visitor Centre. The purpose of this meeting is to discuss a memorandum on dock licensing developed by City of Yellowknife staff for presentation to the Municipal Services Committee on September 19, 2016. The memorandum proposes a dock site licensing program applying to floatplane and boat owners and would restrict docking on public land to a limited number of assigned dock sites. A copy of the memorandum is available on the city website.
This issue is of particular significance for members who park floatplanes on Back Bay between Otto Drive and Lessard Drive as the proposed policy would assign docks through a lottery process, impose conditions and restrictions on the use of those docks, and authorize enforcement action against all other docks. Furthermore, if this policy is adopted, all members who park aircraft on city property, including East Bay and Kam Lake, may be affected in the future . All members are invited and strongly encouraged to attend this meeting. If members have any questions, or are unable to attend but want to make opinions or ideas known, please contact Hal Logsdon at 873-5569 or logsdon@theedge.ca. NWTFA members who store their aircraft at the Yellowknife airport have probably received a notice from the GNWT Department of Transportation (DOT) to renew their licence. The notice requests that an application fee of $250 be submitted with the application for renewal. We have been advised that the application fee is not required for parking licences but that the completed application form must be returned to DOT so their information is up to date. The completed form can be returned to DOT by fax or email. We have also been advised that the annual fee will not be increased for renewals and that applicants may request a term of up to five years during which the annual fee will not be changed. Presumably, members will be billed for the annual fee and provided with a licence for execution.

The NWT Floatplane Association/COPA Flight 108 will be hosting its annual COPA for Kids event on Saturday, July 16, 2016 at the Wardair Dock in Yellowknife. The mission of COPA For Kids is to provide a motivational aviation experience, focusing on a flight in an airplane, in an effort to interest and engage youth in general aviation. Youth between ages 8-17 are eligible for COPA for Kids flights.
Our COPA for Kids event is unique in that all flights are in floatplanes. Kids are initially introduced to the science and general mechanics of the plane by the pilot and are then treated to a flight in the co-pilot's seat. Although the flights are free, pre-registration is required. This event is made possible by the volunteer effort of our members as pilots, dock handlers and dispatchers. Pilots interested in participating should contact Hal Logsdon. Pilots must be on floats, have an intercom and headphones for each passenger, and be current and have all required equipment on board. We will operate flights at 9 am, 10 am and 11 am. Pilots are required to do a brief preflight demonstration before each flight and take passengers for a short flight. Three Yellowknife planes, with Jeff and Debbie Anderson, Steve and Anna-May St. Amand and their children Cole and Liam, and Jesse and Pat Jasper, flew to Hay River on Sunday, May 22, 2016. They were met and picked up by our Hay River member, Jim Tennant, and went to the Keys Restaurant at the Ptarmigan Inn for lunch. A flight plan was filed and all returned home safely.
